In his latest Inc Magazine article MBI Professor Steven Pedigo gives us a short lesson in economic geography. He addresses the critical role that cities play in the competitiveness and economic growth of businesses and offers a a basic summary of the MBI’s first course, New Global Economy. In this course Steven challenges his CEDIM MBI students – entrepreneurs and small business owners – to consider the question of place: “How does your city support your business growth?”

Steven addresses the impact of industry clusters on business, the return of the talented workforce to cities as well as the importance of urban anchor institutions and the entrepreneurial force. He argues that “Where you locate your business hinges on more than economics. A city might be good for your bottom line (i.e. low cost of rent, ease of parking) but unappealing to your workers. If your business is unable to engage in the local cluster, you may find it difficult to attract and retain a talented workforce. “
